After six days of racing, and a navigating the notorious ‘Maze’, Team Mountain Designs have won XPD 8th Edition. A difficult and technical 48km trek in the Harveys Ranges, lived up to expectations, shaking up the leaderboard and delivering teams a navigational head-ache in the final stages of the race. XPD DAY 4 – CHALLENGING ‘RUNNING RIVER’ TREK DELIVERS THE HIGHS AND LOWS OF ADVENTURE RACING TO TOP TEAMS

As night fell on Day Three of racing, teams continued to navigate through the rocky terrain down the Running River gorge, whilst climbing, scrambling and swimming through rock pools. Continuing to forge ahead, Peak Adventure, now with a four hour penalty for forgetting a piece of compulsory equipment, completed the trek just before midnight. This left the other top teams in the rock gorge to battle on, before the dawn fell. Team Merrell Adventure Addicts endured a cold canyon swim through three rock pools at 2am in the morning. XPD DAY 1 – FRENCH TEAM RAIDLIGHT DOMINATE A DAY ON MAGNETIC ISLAND

The race commenced today with 36 teams sea kayaking 8km from The Stand, Townsville, to Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island in near perfect conditions. Team Raidlight set the pace for the day arriving first to Picnic Bay. Followed closely by Peak Adventure and Team Mountain Designs, one minute apart. Raidlight then extended their lead during the 30km coasteering leg by boulder hopping around the first major headland, whilst other lead teams climbed high up along ridge lines avoiding the swims. The boulder hopping proved testing for many teams. Team Mountain Designs describing the course as “bloody rocky”. Five Days Until Australia’s Toughest Race Begins

Next Wednesday the 5th of August at 0900, 36 teams representing 10 different countries will set off on the start of Australia’s toughest race, XPD Expedition Adventure race. These adventurers race non stop, day and night over a 650km course pushing themselves to the ultimate limits of human endurance. They must navigate, bike, hike and kayak through a course that is only revealed to them 24hours before the start. The 2013 Adventure Racing World Series continued with round 6 taking place in the Australian outback as XPD returned to the calendar from September 1st – 11th. (The last outing for the race was the AR World Championships in Tasmania in 2011.) 120 fresh faced racers gathered at Arkaroola on Wednesday to commence an epic 10-day adventure through the spectacular outback of South Australia. Day one of XPD brought searing hot temperatures to add to the strenuous physical challenges of trekking and bike riding in the Northern Flinders Ranges. Teams gathered at the top of Acacia Ridge in Arkaroola in the early morning light. A ceremony was held to honour the two Japanese adventure racers from Team Real Discovery who lost their lives during a kayaking accident earlier this year. OUTBACK XPD BEGINS IN SOARING TEMPERATURES

Temperatures are predicted to reach 35 degrees in the Flinders Ranges today for the start of XPD, the Adventure Racing World Series Race in Outback South Australia. Thirty teams of four from around Australia and across the world will trek, mountain bike and paddle over 700 kms from Arkaroola to Port Augusta with 10 days to finish the course.
